Aesthetics of Realism in Libyan Cinema: A Reading in the Structure of Image and Sound in the Film Al-Shathiyya (The Shrapnel)

This study examines the aesthetics of realism in Libyan cinema through an in-depth analytical reading of the visual and sonic structures of Al-Shathiyya (1986), approaching the film as a cinematic model that treats realism as an aesthetic and ethical stance rather than merely a technical or stylistic choice. The study is grounded in key theoretical frameworks within the philosophy of cinematic realism (Bazin, Kracauer), alongside Michel Chion's theory of audiovisual perception. The study concludes that the realism of Al-Shathiyya emerges as a sensory - existential experience in which image and sound converge to articulate a deeper inquiry into the relationship between human beings and a place saturated with the memory of unseen material violence.
